Begginer to Normal maps in unity

I recently started working with Unity. Up until now all my work was done in 3Ds Max, but now i have to move what i created over to unity. For the most part its easy, but Normal maps often give me a bad time.

My normals are generated either in Max under the bake option, or in Crazy bump. Almost everything i was doing so far has been furniture but my latest project was a statue bust, and i had a lot of problems with it. In the end i discovered that i had to set the strength of my normal map to -1 in order to get the result closest to desired.

I don't have a specific question, but rather i'm looking for tips or good tutorials on how to improve my normal mapping. (and anything else)
